Walk in the rain

I didn't have an umbrella with me this morning as I walked to the subway. So I walked as much as I could under the awnings of the stores on First Avenue. I was listening to an interview with Lama Marut, a Buddhist who looks a bit like Joe Pesci and sounds like Spiccoli from Fast Times at Ridgemont High. And yet the interview with him was just great. I didn't even mind the rain. It meshed quite well with the book I'm reading now by Max Weber, The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism.

Water, water everywhere...

that's right, and not a drop to drink. Since buying the house up in the Catskills a few months ago I've been a little unhappy with the water pressure...and since a month ago it dwindled to a trickle of nothing. Not good. It's well water, and the prior owner had installed a really top-end new pump and pressure tank in the basement, so I couldn't figure out why no water was coming out. I finally deduced that the pressure tank was more tank that=n pressure -- it's supposed to be at 28PSI or so and it was hovering around 7 PSI. So I spent $50 on an air compressor and pumped it up (yes, i think I am handy enough to mess around with such things.) Alas, that only half solved the problem. Once the pump filled the pressure tank with water, everythign seemd ok, but boy, did it take a long time to fill the tank. What should have taken about 3mins took more than an hour. This means that not enough water was coming out of the ground -- probably due to air getting into the line somewhere. So I had a plumber come by and $350 bucks later he tells me that the well itself must be compromised...i need a new well. So now I have to either spend another $1900 on a well in the basement or do the really right thing and have a deep well dug (which will run about $7000.) Ahhhh...a country home is so relaxing! (sarcasm) But once I get this worked out (I got the heating set up now) I'll be able to enjoy the place a bit more...and focus on the parts of renovating that are more fun and creative, like redoing a bathroom or kitchen etc.

Supertramp

I'm sitting in a local pizza joint chomping a slice. Supertramp is on the
stereo totally blaring. I wish it weren't a "school night" so I could have
a few rolling rocks. As much as I love my job, sometimes I really wish I
had a gig with more typical expectations about my time commitment. I would
sit here eating cheesey pizza and listening to cheasy tunes a lot longer
tonight.
